East Hill House
Planning has been secured for unique house in Sevenoaks, UK.
The site falls within the Metropolitan Greenbelt and an area of outstanding natural beauty. The client set a challenging brief “to supplant the existing planning permission of an single-storey with basement that didn’t have any light with daylight. Onerous Planning conditions meant that we couldn’t go up nor introduce any visible openings or windows into the basement walls”
Baca’s design creates a contemporary dwelling that is environmentally sustainable. The design brief is solved in section. The house is conceived, as a series of interlocking volumes, low in some places and taller in others to ‘steal’ and additional storey within the planning height restrictions. Windows located with the ground floor walls and from the skylight above provide illumination to the basement. This intervention creates both a dramatic sense of arrival but also a two and a half storey atrium that unlocks the full potential of this compact plan – with a house that feels much bigger on the inside that it purports to be on its exterior.
This will be a house full of surprise and delight.
